Two former Dallas Mavericks decided to chase rings on contenders

McGee joined the Mavs back in 2015, but only played in 34 games during his lone season in Dallas. He was waived in the summer of 2016 and went on to win three championship rings.

McGee signed a one-year $5 million deal to be the backup center for the Suns. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist will be a veteran anchor to their second unit as Phoenix looks to make it two straight NBA Finals appearances. McGee’s rebounding and rim protection are significant upgrades for the Suns when Deandre Ayton is not on the floor.

The Mavericks acquired James Johnson in the 2020 offseason as part of a three-team trade. They were excited about his defense and toughness, but things did not work out as planned. Johnson was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans at the deadline in the J.J. Redick deal.

The 34-year-old was a free agent this offseason and decided to join the Brooklyn Nets. Johnson is part of a veteran supporting cast around Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden that makes the Nets title favorites coming into the 2021-2022 season.

Both James Johnson and JaVale McGee are veterans looking to chase championship rings this season.
