Two former Dallas Mavericks draft picks land training camp deals
Not all deals are guaranteed contracts in the NBA. Some players are just invited to training camp for the opportunity to grab a spot on the 15-man regular-season roster.
Former Mavs first-round pick Dennis Smith Jr. signed one with the Portland Trail Blazers this summer. He will head to training camp on Sept. 28 looking to earn his way onto the roster. Smith Jr. has struggled since leaving Dallas in the Kristaps Porzingis deal. He has fallen out of the rotation several times and bounce around to multiple teams. The 23-year-old will look to revitalize his career in Portland.
Mavs 2020 second-round pick Tyler Bey heads to training camp with the Rockets where he is fighting for a two-way contract on a rebuilding team. His rookie season with the Mavs did not go as planned as the 22-year-old played just 71 total minutes and failed to impress. He did not even join the Mavericks in summer league this year, but has another opportunity in Houston.
Both Dennis Smith Jr. and Tyler Bey are still young and packed with potential. They need to prove themselves during training camp if they want to stick in the NBA this season. Dallas Mavericks fans should be watching both players closely.
