Trade for Dallas Mavericks to acquire Goran Dragic: 3. Two for one
Dragic is on a $19.4 million expiring contract after the Heat picked up his option. The Mavericks will have to trade multiple players to Toronto to match salaries because both teams are over the cap. Here is the deal that gets thrown out most often.
The Mavs give up Dwight Powell, Willie Cauley-Stein, and a second-rounder to get Dragic. Dallas would not be opposed to this trade because they have five serviceable centers on their roster. Kristaps Porzingis could start at the five with Moses Brown and Boban Marjanovic coming off the bench. Dallas would prefer to keep Cauley-Stein, but filling their playmaking need with Dragic would outweigh that.
The problem with this deal is from the Raptors’ side. They traded for Precious Achiuwa, who figures to play minutes at the five. They also have Khem Birch, Chris Boucher, and Freddie Gillespie looking for time at center. Adding two more serviceable centers does not help the Raptors. Even if Powell and Cauley-Stein crack the rotation, one second-round pick is not worth the roster logjam this trade creates.
Let us scrap this deal and move on to something that works better for both sides.
