Post-free agency trade for Dallas Mavericks to consider: 3. Mavs land Markkanen
Markkanen’s free agency has been one of the most interesting of the summer. The 24-year-old reported wants out of Chicago and would be eager to join the Mavericks. His restricted free agency status throws a wrench into it, though.
The Bulls added Lonzo Ball, DeMar DeRozan, and Alex Caruso this summer. Markkanen does not appear to be part of their long-term plans, but cap space around the league has dried up forcing a deal out of Chicago to come via sign-and-trade. No team is giving up a talented 24-year-old for zero return in that type of deal.
Assuming both teams are over the salary cap by the time this deal gets completed, they will need to match salaries. The terms of Markkanen’s new contract will determine how much money the Mavericks would need to send back to Chicago. Will the 24-year-old get $15 million per year? Could Dallas land him on a team-friendly contract? Those questions are impossible to answer.
Would the Bulls be interested in acquiring Dwight Powell, Tyrell Terry, and a second-round pick for Markkanen? How eager are they to get the 24-year-old off their roster? It is something to watch as training camp draws closer.
