Free agent still available Dallas Mavericks should target: 4. Lauri Markkanen
The Bulls have been one of the winners of the offseason. They agreed to a sign-and-trade to acquired Lonzo Ball just minutes into free agency, but Chicago was not done there. They pulled off a second sign-and-trade to land DeMar DeRozan and signed free agent guard Alex Caruso. All of the activity leaves Chicago in an interesting position with Markkanen.
The seven-footer is a restricted free agent, so the Bulls can match any offer. They are just $19.5 million under the tax and $26 million below the hard cap with six roster spots to fill, per Bobby Marks. Giving Markkanen even $15 million per season will make them a tax team.
Some team could swoop in and grab the 24-year-old away from the Bulls. Injuries have been an issue but there is no questioning Markkanen’s talent. He is a strong shooter, rebounder, and scorer. Even if the fit is not perfect, acquiring a improving player on a fair market value contract is good business. The Mavs could trade him later if things are not working out as planned.
Lauri Markkanen is one of the most interesting still available free agents to watch. Will he land a significant deal? Do the Bulls match his offer sheet? The Dallas Mavericks should be calling about a sign-and-trade, but do not expect them to land Markkanen.
