Plan B free agent option for Dallas Mavericks: 3. Norman Powell
Powell continues to improve and is coming off the best season of his career. The 28-year-old was traded from Toronto to Portland mid-season, but it did little to slow him down. He averaged 18.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 32.0 minutes per game combined between the two stops. Powell shot 47.7 percent from the field, 41.1 percent on his threes, and 87.1 percent from the foul line.
Powell declined his $11.6 million player option for next season and is an unrestricted free agent. The Blazers are expecting to make a strong offer to retain his services, but he could be had for the right price.
Powell would be the second scorer and floor spacer the Dallas Mavericks crave. The 28-year-old should take another small step forward next year. He shot 43.2 percent on his 271 catch and shoot 3-point attempts last season. Powell would thrive playing off Luka Doncic. The Mavericks superstar creates a ton of wide-open looks that the 6’3 wing is no stranger to knocking down.
Norman Powell would be an offensive upgrade for the Dallas Mavericks, but his defense is a question mark. He rated 164th out of 250 qualified players in FiveThirtyEight’s Defensive RAPTOR last season. Would the offensive upgrade outweigh his defense? Powell is a strong Plan B option for Dallas if they miss out on their top choice.
