The Dallas Mavericks want to make a splash in free agency. They circled this summer as the one to create cap space for years ago, but the Mavs did not anticipate many of the top names signing extensions with their current teams. Dallas still has their sights set on adding a marquee free agent to improve their roster around superstar Luka Doncic.
The Mavericks traded Josh Richardson for Moses Brown on July 31 to clear additional room. J-Rich exercised his $11.6 million player option, and Dallas saved roughly $10 million in the swap. They can have roughly $32 million in cap space if they renounce their cap holds and decline Willie Cauley-Stein’s team option. That still may not be enough for what Dallas is hoping to accomplish.
The Mavs want to add Kyle Lowry and re-sign Tim Hardaway Jr. That is their number one scenario. Both men figure to have multiple suitors. What if Dallas’ ideal scenario does not work out?
10 Plan B free agents for the Dallas Mavericks to target
If Lowry and/or Hardaway Jr. decide to sign elsewhere, the Mavs will have to pivot quickly. The top names are all likely to sign fast. It is unlikely that Dallas would be able to shift their sights to Mike Conley or Chris Paul if they miss out on Lowry because all three point guards figure to exit the market quickly.
The Dallas Mavericks will be shopping in the second tier of free agents if they are forced to resort to Plan B. Here are ten available players they should target if they miss out on their top option.
