The Dallas Mavericks were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year, and much of the blame was placed on the shoulders of Kristaps Porzingis. The 7’3 big man struggled in the series. The Clippers played small and placed Kawhi Leonard on the Unicorn. KP was forced into a floor-spacing role, and he struggled to protect the rim on the defensive end.

The poor performance had Mavs fans clamoring for a trade, but there were changes in the team’s leadership. Donnie Nelson was ousted and replaced by Nico Harrison as general manager and president of basketball operations. Jason Kidd is Dallas’ new head coach after Rick Carlisle resigned. The new front office is excited about Porzingis and what he can offer when healthy. It seems Dallas is set to keep the Unicorn as they hope to unlock his best version yet.

The Mavs want to build around Luka Doncic. They should be looking for the right pieces that jump them into title contention, which means fitting next to Porzingis too. What free agents pair nicely with the Unicorn?

78.7 percent of Porzingis’ makes were assisted last season. He cannot create his own shot, so the Mavericks need a shot creator on the floor with the Unicorn at all times. They would also like to put floor spacers around him on the wings. KP struggles defending on the perimeter, making an above league-average addition there a must.

Here are five free agents the Dallas Mavericks should target because they pair nicely with Kristaps Porzingis.
