Free agents Dallas Mavericks should avoid this offseason: 4. Enes Kanter
The Mavs could be searching for a center this offseason as Boban Marjanovic heads into free agency. The team has an option on Willie Cauley-Stein’s contract, but they may be forced to decline it to maximize their cap space. If Dallas is in the market for a center, they should avoid Enes Kanter.
The 6’10 big man has played ten seasons in the NBA. He is a talented offensive player that rebounds well. Last season, Kanter averaged 11.2 points and 11.0 rebounds in 24.4 minutes per game. Those are monster numbers, but it is what the 29-year-old does not do that should force Dallas to turn elsewhere.
Kanter offers little on the defensive end. He rebounds, but does not protect the rim and gets targeted on this end of the floor. He ranked 234th of 250 qualifying players in FiveThirtyEight’s Defensive RAPTOR last season. The Mavs were 21st in defensive rating and adding another subpar defender could be disastrous.
Kanter’s porous defense has limited his playing time in the playoffs in five of his six trips. The 29-year-old can get buckets, but Dallas has no issues there. They should avoid Enes Kanter purely on lack of fit.
