The Dallas Mavericks are coming off of a first-round playoff loss at the hands of the LA Clippers for the second straight year. Even though they forced a Game 7, Dallas has a bitter taste in their mouth after winning the first two games in Los Angeles.
The Mavs need to improve the role players around Luka Doncic. Building through free agency is going to be costly as the superstar is set to sign a super-max deal. The cheapest way to get quality role players will be through the draft.
Dallas does not currently hold a pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. They shipped their first-round pick to the New York Knicks in the Kristaps Porzingis trade, and the Mavs dealt their second-rounder to New Orleans for J.J. Redick and Nicolo Melli. Dallas could trade back into the draft, though.

The Mavs can accumulate draft capital fairly easily. They can make a trade or even buy a pick.
Why would Dallas do this if they never play their rookies anyway? The main reason would be because Rick Carlisle is no longer the head coach. With Jason Kidd replacing him, rookies should have an easier time finding minutes. The Hall of Fame point guard deserves partial credit for the development of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton in Milwaukee. Kidd knows just what buttons to press to get young guys started.
