Under the radar free agent Dallas Mavericks should target: 2. Kelly Olynyk
The Mavs thought they traded for Olynyk in the summer of 2019 in a deal that was later nixed by the Miami Heat. The inclusion of Goran Dragic became a sticking point that caused the move to be called off.
The Heat traded Olynyk to the Rockets back in March where the 6’11 big man showed what he could do as a starter. He averaged 19.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.4 steals in 31.1 minutes over the final 27 games of the season. Olynyk shot 54.5 percent from the field and 39.2 percent on his threes over that stretch.
The 30-year-old has never made more than $12.2 million in a season, and he is not among the marquee unrestricted free agent this offseason, but Olynyk could make a massive impact for the Dallas Mavericks. He is a stretch four that can rebound and defend multiple positions. The 6’11 big man would give Dallas a capable secondary creator that will space the floor and can score a dozer per game.
The Mavericks need to improve their rebounding and would love to add a modern big man that can knock down jumpers. Kelly Olynyk loved his role with the Rockets and could be looking to re-sign in Houston, but Dallas should be targeting the 30-year-old this summer.
