Under the radar free agent Dallas Mavericks should target: 4. T.J. McConnell
McConnell is coming off a career year with the Pacers. He averaged 8.6 points, 6.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.9 steals in 26.0 minutes per game. The 6’1 guard shot 55.9 percent from the field.
The Mavs would love to put a strong perimeter defender next to Luka Doncic in the backcourt. They are also searching for a secondary creator that can bring the ball up the floor and get the offense into their sets. Dallas must lighten Luka’s load, so he has gas in the tank for those clutch minutes in the playoffs. McConnell finished 86th in FiveThirtyEight’s Defensive RAPTOR, and he was tenth in the league in assists.
The 29-year-old is not the perfect fit. He has attempted just 313 3-pointers in his six NBA seasons and is a well below-average shooter from long range. McConnell would not solve the Mavericks’ need for a secondary scorer, and he has limited playoff experience. The 6’1 guard would provide Dallas with a pesky defender that can handle the ball and help their offense keep rolling when Luka Doncic rests.
T.J. McConnell has never made more than $3.5 million in a season, and he is an under-the-radar free agent that would help the Dallas Mavericks next season.
