Dallas Mavericks rumors: Looking at Spencer Dinwiddie
Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News rumored the Mavs as one of three teams chasing after Dinwiddie this summer. The Brooklyn Nets will be eager to try to re-sign the 28-year-old guard with the Miami Heat also expected to be in the mix.
Dinwiddie gives the Mavericks the secondary ball-handler, scorer, and playmaker they need to lighten the workload on Luka Doncic. The 6’5 guard is recovering from ACL surgery but has already been cleared for contact. He should be a full-go in training camp, and a fantastic fit in Dallas.
The worry is the contract needed to sign him. Dinwiddie was quoted in the New York Daily News article as saying he would be interested in a five-year $125 million from the Nets. $25 million per season would mean the Mavericks would have to choose between Tim Hardaway Jr. and Dinwiddie. If they can ink Dinwiddie around $20 million, they would still have room to re-sign THJ.
Handing out a four-year deal worth $100 million to a player recovering from a torn ACL is a bit dangerous too. The Dallas Mavericks should be interested in Spencer Dinwiddie, but only at the right price point.
