Dallas Mavericks rumors: Execs think Mavs want Jarrett Allen
Allen is unlikely to be available. He enters restricted free agency, but the Cavaliers are likely to match any offer after giving up a first-round pick to acquire him back in January.
Michael Scotto linked the Mavericks and Hornets as two teams that executives believe could try to sign him this offseason on the HoopsHype podcast. Inking him to an offer sheet is only half the battle. They also need Cleveland to decline their matching rights or to agree to a sign-and-trade to secure his services. That appears unlikely at this time.
Allen just keeps improving. He averaged 12.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks in 29.6 minutes per game this season when combining his time with the Nets and Cavaliers. The 23-year-old has taken a step forward in each of his four NBA seasons and should continue to improve.
Targeting any restricted free agent is a risky move for the Dallas Mavericks. The free-agent class lacks depth, so being forced to wait on another team’s decision could leave Dallas out in the cold. Free agents will sign quickly, meaning the Mavs may be wise to steer clear of Jarrett Allen this offseason.
