Dallas Mavericks rumors: Lauri Markkanen wants to play in Dallas
Markkanen is a restricted free agent this offseason. According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, he wants to play for the Mavs. The Knicks are another reported landing spot as Markkanen wants out of Chicago. The Bulls can match any offer, so it will be interesting to see how the situation plays out.
Dallas should be cautious in handing Markkanen a massive contract. He has played 52 or fewer games in each of the last three seasons. The seven-footer appeared in a career-high 68 as a rookie. Markkanen has also seen his minute’s decrease in each of the last three years to a career-low 25.8 per game in the 2020-2021 season. His scoring and rebounding declined, but his percentages improved in his fourth season in the NBA.
The 24-year-old still has room to grow, but the injuries and contract are worrisome. Chicago figures to match a fair offer, meaning Dallas would have to overpay to secure Lauri Markkanen’s services.
The Mavs would be locked in long-term on another young big man with an injury history. Fans are dreading the remainder of Kristaps Porzingis’ contract. The situation with Markkanen is similar, except the Bulls’ big man has never been an All-Star and his playing time is trending in the wrong direction. The Dallas Mavericks should avoid Lauri Markkanen this offseason.
