Restricted free agent worth the Dallas Mavericks overpaying: 1. John Collins
Collins is the premier restricted free agent on the market. There were questions about what the Hawks were going to do at the trade deadline. Re-signing Collins and giving Trae Young a rookie max extension will push Atlanta into the luxury tax. They seemed unlikely to pay it until their run to the Eastern Conference Finals.
Atlanta’s roster improvements took some weight off Collins’ shoulders. He averaged 17.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.0 block in 29.3 minutes per game during the regular season. The 23-year-old shot 55.6 percent from the field, 39.9 percent on his threes, and 83.3 percent from the foul line.
Having a stretch four that can rebound and protect the rim would be a fantastic fit next to Luka Doncic in Dallas. John Collins could be a pick and roll partner and lob threat too. In 2020, the 6’9 big man produced over 21 points and ten rebounds per game. He keeps improving too.
All five of these restricted free agents are worth overpaying for, but the Dallas Mavericks should focus their sights elsewhere. Landing the signature of a former All-Star should be their goal this summer. Can they accomplish it? Stay tuned to find out.
