2021 NBA Draft mock #18: Oklahoma City Thunder (via Miami Heat): Usman Garuba
Garuba played in 86 games with Real Madrid’s first team this season. The 19-year-old averaged 4.7 points and 4.6 rebounds in 17.2 minutes per game. He was the EuroLeague Rising Star and Liga ACB’s Best Young Player this season. The teenager showcased an intriguing skill set playing in arguably the second-toughest league in the world.
Garuba’s perimeter defense stands out. At 6’8 and 220 pounds, he guarded some of the best ball-handlers Europe has to offer. The 19-year-old has a reported 7’3 wingspan and could be the switchable defender that every NBA covets. Garuba may be able to guard every player on the floor during his peak.
His offensive game is a work-in-progress. The teenager shot just 31.6 percent over 133 3-point attempts this season. Garuba did not handle the ball or make plays either. It will be interesting to see what the team that drafts him tries to do with him on this end of the floor.
The Thunder stick with their plan of grabbing players with massive upside by taking Usman Garuba. Oklahoma City continues its rebuild with three talented options that could grow into key rotation players for their next contending team.
