2021 NBA Draft mock #11: Charlotte Hornets: Franz Wagner

The Hornets drafted their centerpiece in LaMelo Ball in 2020. They are now looking to put pieces around him. Spreading the floor with shooters and improving their defense are likely goals for Charlotte this offseason.

Wagner played two seasons at Michigan. He took a step forward in his sophomore campaign to average 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 block in 31.7 minutes per game. The 19-year-old shot 47.7 percent from the field and 83.5 percent on his free throws. The younger brother of Moritz Wagner looks destined to be taken in the lottery.

NBA teams will be intrigued by a 6’9 player that can handle the ball and make simple plays with the potential to play some stretch four. He shot 34.3 percent on his 102 3-point attempts last season. Wagner made a significant improvement with his jumper and another step forward could be in the cards.

The 19-year-old also averaged strong steal and block numbers in college. It will take time, but there is the potential for him to be an above-average defender in the NBA. The Hornets could improve on both ends of the floor by adding Franz Wagner with the 11th overall selection.
