The Dallas Mavericks are looking for a new head coach and president of basketball operations. Donnie Nelson and the franchise mutually parted ways with head coach Rick Carlisle resigning the following day. The Mavs’ long-held leadership structure was gone and the team was searching for two new decision-makers to start the most important offseason in franchise history.

On June 24, Carlisle agreed to join the Indiana Pacers as their new head coach.  He strongly supported Jason Kidd to replace him in his former role.

The Mavericks appear closer to making that a reality. Tim MacMahon reported the team is progressing in contract talks with the Hall of Fame point guard. Get the latest here.

Tim MacMahon also reported the following on Thursday evening.

The Mavericks are quickly progressing to fill their voids in both the front office and coaching staff. Michael Finley joined the team in 2012 and has been assistant general manager.

It will be Jason Kidd’s third opportunity as an NBA head coach. He was the starting point on the Mavericks 2011 championship team and a ten-time All-Star in his 19-year NBA career. Kidd retired in 2013 and immediately became head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. He led them to the playoffs in his lone season on the bench before being traded to Milwaukee.

Kidd spent four years coaching the Bucks. He helped Giannis Antetokounmpo develop into a superstar, but was ultimately fired during his fourth season with the team struggling, Kidd led the Bucks to the playoffs twice during his tenure as head coach.

The 48-year-old has been an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers for the last two seasons. He helped them win the title in 2020.

His two tenures playing in Dallas and strong relationship with new special advisor Dirk Nowitzki certainly played a role in him re-joining the Mavericks. Stay tuned for plenty more on Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks this offseason.
