Team that could acquire Kristaps Porzingis from Dallas Mavericks: 3. Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans fired head coach Stan Van Gundy after one season. They finished 11th in the Western Conference and were ten games below .500. The Pelicans are looking to improve their roster around Zion Williamson this offseason. The Athletic reported (subscription required) that some of Williamson’s family members want him playing elsewhere.
New Orleans embraced point Zion down the stretch. If that is the plan moving forward, the Pelicans need shooters to surround their 20-year-old star. Expect New Orleans to attempt to trade away Steven Adams and Eric Bledsoe this offseason to improve their floor spacing. They have a massive decision to make on restricted free agent Lonzo Ball as well.
Kristaps Porzingis would be a fantastic offensive fit next to Zion in the frontcourt. The Unicorn shot 37.6 percent on 6.0 3-point attempts per game this season. He would give the Pelicans a 7’3 stretch five that can pick and pop or spot up. New Orleans would be difficult to match up against in the frontcourt with Brandon Ingram rounding it out for the Pels.
The Mavericks likely get back Adams and some combination of salary filler in this deal. They would have to believe that the 6’11 big man would form a dynamic pick and roll pairing with Luka. His rebounding and rim-protecting would be nice additions, but do not expect the Dallas Mavericks to make this deal.
