Where might former Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle go: 3. New Orleans
After finishing the year 31-41, the New Orleans Pelicans decided to fire Stan Van Gundy after one season in charge. They have a young generational talent in Zion Williamson and need to start winning to keep him in New Orleans. The Athletic reported (subscription required) that Van Gundy clashed with both players and management during his brief time with the Pelicans, and it led to his dismissal.
There have been rumors floating around that Zion and his family no longer wish to be in New Orleans, so that could have an impact on Carlisle’s interest. Make no mistake if Zion is indeed committed to the Pelicans long term, the former Mavericks head coach will take a long look at a potential offer.
The 61-year-old wants to join a winning situation, and New Orleans could offer him the chance to coach one of the league’s best young talents.
The Pelicans also have a plethora of skill. Zion, Brandon Ingram, and soon-to-be restricted free agent Lonzo Ball are all incredibly talented and just waiting for their full potential to be unlocked. If that young talent stays intact and they add a champion-caliber coach, the sky would be the limit for New Orleans. Rick Carlisle figures to have plenty of other options, though.
