2021 NBA Draft mock #19: New York Knicks: Cameron Thomas
Thomas is one of the best scorers in this class. He averaged 23.0 points per game in his lone season at LSU. The 19-year-old shot 88.2 percent from the free-throw line on an impressive 7.6 attempts each night. He is a crafty bucket getter that can hit from anywhere on the floor.
Players scoring 23 a night are usually gone in the lottery, but Thomas comes with plenty of questions. The rest of his stat line reads 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 0.9 steals in 34.0 minutes per game. He is 6’4 but has struggled on the defensive end. Thomas profiles as a sixth man that can score with the best of them. He will have to be hidden on defense early in his career and opposing teams will likely target him.
Thomas needs to improve his playmaking ability to make a larger impact in the NBA. He looks too much for his shot and struggles to get others involved.
Derrick Rose is set to become an unrestricted free agent, which could leave the Knicks searching for a sixth man. They could draft Cameron Thomas to come in and get buckets off the bench. Coach Tom Thibodeau should help him improve his defense and reach his potential too.
