2021 NBA Draft mock #15: Washington Wizards: James Bouknight
The Wizards should be doing everything they can to keep Bradley Beal in Washington. The three-time All-Star has averaged over 30 points per game for two straight seasons. The Wizards won their way into the playoffs but were quickly dispatched by the top-seeded 76ers in five games. Expect Washington to be aggressive in adding pieces this offseason.
Bouknight averaged 18.7 points on 44.7 percent shooting from the field during his second season at UConn, despite dealing with an elbow injury that cost him over a month of action. He added 5.7 rebounds and over one steal per game.
The 19-year-old is strictly a scorer on offense at this stage in his career. He hit just 32.0 percent of his 147 NCAA 3-point attempts over the last two seasons combined. Bouknight averaged less than two assists per game as well. There is some upside to develop in both areas, but the former Huskies guard will need time.
His defense is a work-in-progress. Fans can see flashes, but Bouknight must lock in and be more consistent. He has the quickness, size, and athleticism to be a plus defender in the NBA. Will he reach that potential? The Wizards take him with the belief that he can contribute now and develop into a starter in his prime.
