Adjustment to expect in Game 2 of Dallas Mavericks vs. Clippers: 4. Clips go small
LA started Game 1 with Patrick Beverley, Ivica Zubac, and Marcus Morris Sr. flanking their two stars. They had Beverley guarding Luka Doncic. The 22-year-old took the smaller guard to school and hunted mismatches against Zubac. Doncic virtually played both players off the floor with his incredible 20-point first half that had the Mavericks in front.
The Clippers adjusted by downsizing and had more success in the final 24 minutes. Expect coach Tyronn Lue to go to it sooner in Game 2. There will be more minutes for Nicolas Batum and Rajon Rondo and less Zubac and Beverley. LA will attempt to space the floor and make the Mavericks adjust.
Going smaller also allows the Clippers to switch everything on defense. Luka will find it more difficult to hunt a mismatch, especially if they are throwing the occasional double-team at the Mavericks star.
LA must do a better job on the glass too. Dallas had a 42 to 39 edge in Game 1. The Clippers will emphasize boxing out and crashing hard as they go small. The Dallas Mavericks must make them pay on the boards for downsizing their lineup.
