2021 NBA Draft mock #8: Orlando Magic (via Chicago Bulls): Davion Mitchell

Mitchell was the point guard and lead playmaker for Baylor’s national championship team in 2021. He took a massive leap and his draft stock skyrocketed. The 22-year-old averaged 14.0 points, 5.5 assists, and 1.9 steals in 33.0 minutes per game. Mitchell shot 51.1 percent from the field and 44.7 percent on his threes.

Mitchell is a strong ball-handler and playmaker. He played plus defense in the NCAA, but some teams may knock him for being 6’2 with a slight wingspan. Mitchell was not a volume scorer in college, but he has the quickness to get past his defender at any moment. Teams will be intrigued by his versatile skillset.

The primary question revolves around his outside shooting. Mitchell connected on just 31.2 percent of his 157 3-point attempts in his two other college seasons. That number leaped to 44.7 percent on 141 tries this year. Can he repeat his junior season’s number or will it be an outlier campaign?

The Orlando Magic get two bites at the apple here. They already selected Evan Mobley with the third overall pick, so they want a playmaker guard with their second top-ten pick. Davion Mitchell will allow Cole Anthony to play as more of a combo guard. The 22-year-old may get knocked for his age, but he should help Orlando jumpstart its rebuild with his playmaking and defensive intensity.
