2021 NBA Draft mock #18: New York Knicks: James Bouknight
Bouknight missed over a month of action after elbow surgery, but he still improved mightily in his second season at UConn. The 6’5 guard averaged 18.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 77.8 percent on his free throws. He profiles as a scorer that creates shots for himself.
Bouknight only made 29.3 percent of his 3-point tries this season, but he should be a better shooter in the NBA. His catch and shoot ability is a work-in-progress, but the 20-year-old has the stroke to grow into an above-average marksman.
His biggest hole is his playmaking ability. Bouknight averaged 1.8 assists and 2.8 turnovers per game in his second season at UConn. Can he develop into a playmaker? If not, Bouknight’s best role is as a sixth man scorer. The 20-year-old can get buckets, but he needs to do more to be an NBA starter.
The 6’5 guard has shown flashes on the defensive end, but he is far from consistent. Bouknight has the athleticism and quickness to be an above-average defender, but will he put it all together? The Knicks grab James Bouknight with the hopes they can help him reach his immense potential.
