2021 NBA Draft mock #12: San Antonio Spurs: Josh Giddey
The Spurs could be on the verge of a rebuild of their own. LaMarcus Aldridge departed midseason and was forced to retire because of a heart issue. DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills, and Rudy Gay are all set to be unrestricted free agents this summer. Does San Antonio let DeRozan walk and build the team around Dejounte Murray and Derrick White?
The Spurs draft record speaks for itself. They have had a ton of success over the years turning late first-round picks into rotation players. San Antonio takes a shot on Giddey here. He is a 6’7 playmaker that could be the steal of the draft.
The 18-year-old averaged 11.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 7.8 assists, and 1.1 steals in 32.1 minutes per game this season playing professionally in his native Australia. His passing ability and vision are next level. Giddey could fill DeRozan’s role as the Spurs’ playmaking wing that does a bit of everything.
The biggest knock on Josh Giddey is his shooting. He connected on just 30.9 percent of his 94 3-point attempts this season. DeRozan is not a volume outside shooter, but the Spurs make up for his struggles in that area. Giddey seems like the perfect fit in San Antonio.
