Player at risk of getting squeezed from Dallas Mavericks playoff rotation: 2. Willie Cauley-Stein
Assuming Kristaps Porzingis and Maxi Kleber return from their current injuries, coach Rick Carlisle will have a difficult decision to make for the backup center minutes. KP will start and get significant run. He averaged over 37 minutes a night in the two playoff games he finished in 2020. The remaining ten to 15 minutes are up for grabs.
The Mavericks have been outstanding with Cauley-Stein on the floor this season. Over his 837 minutes, they have an offensive rating of 114.8 and a defensive rating of 104.7. If they produced those numbers for the entire season, Dallas would be eighth on offense and have the best defense in the league.
Trill has put up strong numbers over his last ten games as well. He has averaged 5.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 0.9 steals, and 1.1 blocks in 21.0 minutes per game. Cauley-Stein is shooting 60.0 percent from the field during that stretch.
The 27-year-old big man runs the floor and creates some easy opportunities for the Mavericks in transition. His play has been outstanding this season, but will he earn the backup center minutes over Dwight Powell, who is playing his best basketball of the season down the stretch?
