Glaring hole Dallas Mavericks need to fix this offseason: 3. Scorer
The Mavs are scoring just 111.8 points per game this season, which ranks 17th in the NBA. They sit 26th in pace, so it is not surprising to see their low raw scoring totals. The Mavericks have the eighth-best offensive rating in the league.
Both Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis are elite scorers. They are two of five Mavs that average over ten points per game this season. The problem is both Tim Hardaway Jr. and Josh Richardson can become free agents this summer. If the Mavericks want to have the cap space to chase a third star, they will need to renounce the bird rights of both players.
THJ and JRich are also prone to hot and cold shooting. Dallas does not want to face a crucial game where both players cannot make a basket.
The Mavs need a consistent third scorer to boost their offense. They would love to have someone that can create attempts for himself. Adding a third 20-point per game scorer would be ideal, but the free-agent class might not feature that player. The Mavericks may need to hit the trade market to find the third scorer they need to take the next step.
