Should the Dallas Mavericks sign Josh Richardson to a long-term deal?
The Mavs could have over $34 million in cap space this summer if they renounce the bird rights to their free agents. Dallas will have to decide if they plan on chasing a third star or multiple role players. If they select the latter, the Mavericks could retain Richardson’s bird rights and go over the cap to re-sign him.
The price will be an important factor. If a desperate team swoops in and offers Richardson $20 million per season, the Mavs front office should let him walk. If JRich is going to sign for his market value, expect Dallas to be in on the bidding.
The Mavericks re-signing Richardson long-term should come down to their belief in his shooting and defense. Can he return to being an above-league average shooter? Is his recent stretch of 40-plus percent sustainable? How much impact can JRich make on the defensive end? The Mavs had a year to answer those questions. If they are satisfied, Dallas should re-sign him long-term.
The Dallas Mavericks will have multiple franchise-altering decisions to make this offseason. That means there will be rumors, news, and analysis every day. Keep it locked to The Smoking Cuban for all the latest.
