Trade Dallas Mavericks should make before the deadline: 2. Swing for Collins
John Collins is unlikely to be available as the Hawks have won eight straight games to soar to fifth in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta spent significant money in the offseason to improve their roster, so trading their starting four just as they are about to reach the postseason seems unwise.
Collins is a restricted free agent this summer and is in for a significant payday. Are the Hawks willing to shell out $20-plus million per season to keep Collins long-term? It will put them deep into the luxury tax with Trae Young’s extension looming as well. Atlanta would be wise to trade Collins if they are plan on letting him walk in free agency.
The market for a 23-year-old big man capable of averaging over 20 points and ten rebounds per game figures to be robust. Collins can also protect the rim and shoots efficiently. Would a first-rounder, a pick swap, and a 2021 second-round draft choice be enough? The Hawks can likely get more, but the Mavericks should jump at the chance at acquiring the 23-year-old big man as he gives Dallas three young pillars to build around moving forward.
