Why Dallas Mavericks should not trade for Andre Drummond: 2. Does not solve issues
The Mavs have issues. Their struggles are not just a factor of bad luck and important players missing time. Those things did not help, but the Mavericks have been dreadful on defense. Even during their recent hot stretch, they allowed 116 or more points in all seven games. Dallas appears to be breaking out of its shooting slump, but there have been no signs of defensive improvement, despite the team’s emphasis.
The Mavs defensive rating is 114.6. Cleveland’s defensive rating with Drummond on the floor this season is 115.4. The Cavs sit at 113.5 when the big man heads to the bench. Drummond produces gaudy stats, but he will not solve the Mavericks defensive issues. He rates as a worse rim protector than Kristaps Porzingis and cannot make plays on the perimeter.
Andre Drummond would force coach Carlisle to alter the entire offense too. The Mavs would have to find a way to fit Drummond’s limit game into their attack. Sitting him near the paint pulls in another defender that Luka will need to beat when he drives. Drummond coming to Dallas creates more issues than it solves.
