Takeaway from Dallas Mavericks win over Spurs: 3. Brunson stands out as starter
Coach Carlisle has used Jalen Brunson in the starting five since he returned from his quarantine. The 24-year-old continues to grow and improve. He had 19 points in Wednesday’s win over Indiana on eight of 13 shooting from the field.
JB followed it up with 16 points on six of 11 including three 3-pointers in San Antonio. Brunson also had four rebounds and six assists. The Mavericks outscored the Spurs by 12 points during his 31 minutes on the floor.
Dallas was searching for a secondary ball-handler to play next to Luka Doncic this offseason. They brought back Trey Burke and added Josh Richardson in hopes of one of those players would step up to fill that role. Brunson has done well over the last three games. The Mavericks offense reaches a different gear with another option to take some of the pressure off Doncic.
Expect Brunson to go back to the bench when Josh Richardson returns, but fans should not be worried when they see him earning a spot start. The 6’1 guard has been outstanding when he opens games during his young career, and that will continue moving forward.
