The Mavericks decided to keep their second-round selection too. It was 31st overall after a 2016 trade with the Golden State Warriors. Dallas was happy to add another player ready to step in and improve their roster immediately.

The Mavs selected Tyrell Terry out of Stanford. The 20-year-old guard was one of the best shooters in the NCAA last season. What he the right choice for Dallas? Here is an instant reaction grade of the pick.

One of the Mavs rumors finally landed as the team was linked to Terry last month. The 20-year-old added 20 pounds and grew two inches since his final college game. He is a smart young man that is dedicated to working on his craft. Terry has plenty of upside to be a difference-maker in the NBA.

His best skill is shooting. Terry connected on 40.8 percent of his 152 NCAA 3-point attempts during his lone season at Stanford. The 6’3 guard could grow into a lights-out shooter in the NBA quickly. The Mavs took the second-most threes in the league last season, so adding Terry is a plus.

There are questions about his defense and playmaking ability, but Terry only needs to be a secondary creator in Dallas. His added size should help him on D. The 20-year-old has room to further fill out his body too.

This was a fantastic pick by the Mavs. They shot for upside in the second round but went with a player with one NBA-ready skill with the potential to develop more. Most had Terry projected as a first-round pick, so grabbing him at the start of round two was a win for Dallas.
