Dallas Mavericks: Why they should pursue Dwight Howard in free agency
The Dallas Mavericks went on an all-out pursuit of Dwight Howard back in 2013. The three-time Defensive Player of the Year was one of the hottest free agents on the market. Dallas swung and missed as Howard signed with rival Rockets to pair with James Harden.
Howard followed that signing with a string of stints where he was at odds with teammates and coaches. The center began to be perceived as a locker room cancer and deemed too sensitive to withstand criticism. After playing for five teams in seven years, it seemed like the days of Superman were long gone, and retirement was just around the corner.
However, Howard had a career renaissance last season. After returning to Los Angeles for a second go-around, he managed to find a role on the eventual NBA champion Lakers. The 34-year-old came off the bench and provided a much-needed rebounding and rim-protecting boost whenever he was called upon.
Why the Dallas Mavericks should pursue Dwight Howard in free agency
Howard signed a one-year veteran minimum deal to join the Lakers in 2019. The 6’10 center is an unrestricted free agent this offseason and will be looking to cash in on his championship run.
With a new lease on life and a fresh perspective, it may be time for the Dallas Mavericks to kick the tires on this once-dominant big man to see if there is any juice left for a squad that badly needs an anchor in the low post. Here are five reasons why they should explore signing Dwight Howard.
