2020 NBA Draft mock #14: Boston Celtics (via Grizzlies)- R.J Hampton

This is Boston’s first of three current first-round picks. The Celtics have to make a trade this offseason because they have 13 players under contract already. That leaves only two open roster spots and the desire to add another veteran big man in free agency. Boston could choose to consolidate the picks or trade pieces from their roster for an upgrade.

R.J. Hampton is rising up draft boards because he worked hard on his biggest weakness. The 19-year-old shot just 29.4 percent from 3-point range playing professionally for the New Zealand Breakers this season. He has been in the gym fixing it with Mike Miller and Tyler Relph. Fans can read more about that here (subscription required).

Hampton was viewed as a top ten pick coming into this season. Injuries limited him to just 17 games, and the poor shooting did not help. Remember, he jumped directly from high school to pros. There was a learning curve. Hampton’s number would have likely improved as the season went on.

The 6’5 guard can handle the ball and make plays. There is debate if he is best as the lead or secondary creator. The Celtics are a deep team that can help R.J. Hampton reach his enormous ceiling, which is why they take him with the first of their three selections.
