Free agent replacement for Courtney Lee on Dallas Mavericks: 2. Wesley Matthews

Matthews has a player option for next season at just over $2.6 million. He could choose to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks and chase a ring playing next to Giannis Antetokounmpo. If the 33-year-old opts out, the Dallas Mavericks could be interested in a reunion.

Fans have a love-hate relationship with Iron Man. There are moments where he tries to do too much on the offensive end that results in a contested shot or turnover. That can be frustrating. Matthews is a plus 3-and-D wing, though. He finished 22nd in FiveThirtyEight’s defensive RAPTOR this season and is a career 38.1 percent 3-point shooter.

The veteran wing attempted less pull ups and drives with the Bucks. Perhaps, Matthews is evolving his game into a catch and shoot specialist. That would make him even more intriguing to the Mavericks.

If the 33-year-old becomes available, the Dallas Mavericks will certainly be in contact. Wesley Matthews was one of the team’s best players for three and a half seasons. They signed him because of his shooting and defense back in 2015. Dallas needs it again in 2021 which could create a reunion with Matthews.
