Dallas Mavericks: 5 free agents to replace J.J. Barea if he decides to depart

The Dallas Mavericks took a massive step forward this season. They were back in the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Luka Doncic went from Rookie of the Year to a superstar. Kristaps Porzingis came back healthy and proved he can produce All-Star numbers. The two stars helped lift the supporting cast too.

The Mavs will be looking to build on that success in 2021. They made it clear that the goal is to win a championship. Internal growth will be an important part of making the leap. Dallas also needs a few more pieces.

Mavericks legend J.J. Barea is an unrestricted free agent. The 36-year-old still wants to play. Will the Mavericks bring him back? Fans can read my take on that question here.

Barea wants to play more, but that is unlikely to happen in Dallas. The Mavs have Luka Doncic locked in at point guard playing 35 minutes per game. Jalen Brunson is a capable backup that should play more than the 13 remaining minutes at the position. If Barea comes back, he will be relegated to third point guard duties. That means plenty of DNP-CD’s next season.

If Barea decides to play elsewhere in 2021, the Mavs will be looking to fill that third point guard role. J.J. was used as a spark off the bench. Someone that could create instant offense and get the team out of a funk. The Mavericks would love to find someone capable of filling that role on a veteran minimum deal.

Here are five free agents the Dallas Mavericks could sign to replace J.J. Barea if he departs this offseason.
