2020 NBA Draft mock #5: Cleveland Cavaliers- Obi Toppin

The Cavaliers have a plethora of young pieces signed long-term. Recent lottery picks Darius Garland and Collin Sexton lead the way. Kevin Porter Jr. showed flashes this season.

Cleveland also has Kevin Love and Larry Nance Jr. under contract in the frontcourt. They traded for Andre Drummond. He has a $28.7 million player option for next season. If Drummond decides to play elsewhere, the Cavs select a center here. Assuming he stays, that leaves them looking for a forward.

The Cavaliers were 26th in offensive rating and 30th in defensive. They need help on both ends of the ball.

They select Obi Toppin. He was one of the best scorers in the NCAA last season. He averaged 20.0 points per game while shooting 63.3 percent from the field. Toppin can get buckets at all three levels.

Some scouts question his defense but expect it to be better than advertised. Toppin is 6’9 and 220 pounds. He averaged 1.0 steal and 1.2 blocks per game last season playing for Dayton. His size and strength should allow him to be passable quickly.

Toppin is 22 years old and ready for an NBA role on opening night. Expect him to get buckets for the Cavaliers as they continue to rebuild.
