2020 NBA Draft mock #23: Utah Jazz- Tre Jones
Tre Jones took a massive leap in his second season at Duke. The 6’3 point guard averaged 16.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.8 steals in 35.4 minutes per game. His playmaking was significantly better. He improved his reads and got all of his teammates involved.
The 20-year-old profiles as an outstanding defender too. Jones has a high basketball IQ coupled with the quickness that allows him to check anyone on the perimeter. He won ACC Player of the Year and ACC Defensive Player of the Year this season. The 20-year-old plays with energy and effort. He should be a plus on the defensive end quickly in the NBA.
Some will question his shooting, but Jones made massive improvements there. He connected on just 26.2 percent of his 3-point tries as a freshman at Duke. That number jumped to 36.1 percent in year two. Jones has clearly been working on his shot. Expect more improvements to come as he transitions to the NBA.
The Jazz traded for Mike Conley to have a playmaker next to Donovan Mitchell. Even if they re-sign Jordan Clarkson, Utah needs a backup point guard. Tre Jones gives them a two-way option that can be a playmaker and plus-perimeter defender as they attempt to make a deep playoff run in 2021.
