NBA Mock Draft #14: Portland Trail Blazers- R.J. Hampton

Hampton joined LaMelo Ball in forgoing NCAA basketball and joining the NBL’s Next Stars program. He played for the New Zealand Breakers in a year that did not go as the 19-year-old hoped. Hampton’s stock dropped from a surefire top ten pick to the late lottery thanks to injuries and ineffectiveness in Australia.

He averaged 9.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.2 steals in 21.3 minutes per over 17 games this season. Hampton shot 41.7 percent from the field and 73.7 percent on his free throws. It was a small sample size that was marred by injuries.

Hampton is a 6’5 athletic guard oozing potential. He can handle the ball and make plays. The 19-year-old profiles as more of an off guard and secondary creator at this point. His shooting and defense are question marks too. Hampton needs to improve his jumper and unlock his defensive potential to become a starter in the NBA.

Hampton is a bit of a project coming in. He has one of the highest upsides in the 2020 NBA Draft class, though. There is a reason why he was a consensus top ten selection at the beginning of the season. The Blazers will be looking to unlock that potential and make him the steal of the draft.
