Dallas Mavericks takeaway from scrimmage vs. Lakers: 3. Barea is the backup point guard

The Mavs played their expected starting five against the Lakers. Roughly halfway through the first quarter, coach Carlisle made a line change to put five new players on the court. J.J. Barea and Delon Wright were the backcourt with Jackson, Maxi Kleber, and Boban Marjanovic rounding out the group.

Barea was the point guard and primary ball-handler in the unit. He did not produce a stellar stat line, though. Barea had two assists and one rebound in 17 minutes of action. He missed all three of his field-goal attempts.

Late in the game, Dallas used two-way players Josh Reaves and Antonius Cleveland. Delon Wright remained on the floor, and Barea headed to the bench. The 36-year-old has nothing to prove. He played more of a spark plug role before the suspension, but he could be part of the nightly rotation in the restart.

Trey Burke may throw a wrench in at some point. The Mavericks signed him as a substitute player. He just arrived in Orlando on July 22. Burke must quarantine for at least 36 hours before he can join his teammates. The 27-year-old will be competing with Barea for those backup point guard minutes. It will be a situation to monitor going forward.
