Is Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic best second-year player: Scoring

Since 2000, 21 second-year players have averaged over 20 points per game. The top two came this season. Trae Young is dropping 29.6 a night with Doncic second at 28.7. Only six players have scored more than 25 a night. LeBron James is third with 27.2 points. Vince Carter, Kevin Durant, and Karl-Anthony Towns round out the over 25 per game scorers.

Being an elite scorer is important, but being an efficient one matter too. Luka ranks behind only Towns and Blake Griffin in effective field goal percentage. He is third in true shooting percentage too. KAT and Young are the only two that top him.

The top second-year scorer since 2000 comes down to Luka and KAT. The Mavericks star has a higher raw total, but Towns was the most efficient. In scoring alone, I’d lean towards Towns with Doncic second. The race for third comes down to LeBron, Anthony Davis, Vince Carter, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Joel Embiid, and Young.

Scoring is just one aspect of being a top player. Let us take a look at the advanced metrics to further narrow the field for the best second-year player since 2000.
