Dallas Mavericks secret weapon heading into Orlando: 4. Delon Wright

Many fans expected Wright would be the Mavs opening night starting guard next to Luka Doncic.  Dallas traded two second round picks to acquire him plus signed him to a three-year deal worth over $28 million. That has not been the case, though.

Wright has fallen into a similar role to the one he has played his entire NBA career. The 28-year-old is coming off the bench and averaging 21.7 minutes per game on the season. He produces 7.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.2 steals a night. Wright has improved his 3-point percentage this season. He sometimes turns down open looks, but the uptick is a positive sign.

Brunson’s season-ending injury opens up more minutes for Wright too. D-Wright offers a unique skill. He is one of the best perimeter defenders on the Mavericks roster. That will be necessary as superstar ball-handlers increase their playing time in the postseason. Wright is capable of matching up against all the top lead guards Dallas will face in the playoffs.

Expect the 28-year-old to create an important turnover that leads to a Mavs dunk or hit a clutch shot after being left open. That will have Mavericks fans cheering for their secret weapon Delon Wright.
