Why Dallas Mavericks star Kristaps Porzingis unstoppable in NBA Orlando: 5. Found his role

Porzingis was not firing on all cylinders to begin this season. Nobody could have reasonably expected him to be after missing an entire season rehabbing a torn ACL.

KP was also on a new team playing a different role than he did in New York. Coach Rick Carlisle and the Mavericks made it immediately clear they wanted to limit Porzingis posting up. His role was to shoot more threes and play inside on defense. His rebounding rate improved instantaneously but finding his offensive foot took some time.

The Unicorn’s production was up and down early on. He scored in single digits three times in his first 19 games while also having seven over 20 points. KP appeared to be settling in when a knee injury struck and knocked him out for ten games.

After a few contests to ramp back up, Porzingis found his stride. In his last 15 games played before the suspension, KP averaged 25.2 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.3 blocks in 33.7 minutes per. Expect him to find that rhythm quickly in Orlando. Porzingis was a fast starter in New York. Making that happen could lead to an unstoppable force in Orlando.
