NBA Mock Draft #6: Atlanta Hawks- Obi Toppin
The Atlanta Hawks also fell out of the top four. They sit sixth and are looking for another piece as they continue their rebuild. The Hawks have to decide where to play John Collins and how to construct their team around Trae Young’s defensive limitations.
Atlanta would love the defense of Okongwu. Unfortunately, he is gone. They likely pivot to taking one of the best offensive players in the 2020 NBA Draft class in Obi Toppin.
Toppin was the consensus player of the year in 2020. He averaged 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.0 steal, and 1.2 blocks in 31.6 minutes per game for Dayton. Toppin shot 63.3 percent from the field, 39.0 percent on his 3-point attempts, and 70.2 percent from the free throw line.
NBA teams love young players in the draft. Many always shoot for upside and potential over the ability to play right away. Toppin is 22 years old and should be a rotation player from day one. He is 6’9 and 220 pounds. His size and scoring ability should translate to the NBA immediately.
There are some questions about his defense. That is not uncommon in draft prospects. That fact that he averaged over one block and one steal per game at Dayton is a plus. It is too early to say he will not be a league-average defender in the NBA.
