NBA Mock Draft #5: Cleveland Cavaliers- Onyeka Okongwu
The Cavaliers tumbled out of the top four in the lottery simulation. They dropped three positions, but still sit fifth.
The 19-year-old Okongwu was exceptional during his lone season at USC. He averaged 16.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 2.7 blocks in 30.6 minutes per game. Okongwu shot 61.6 percent from the field and 72.0 percent on his free throws.
He is 6’9 and 245 pounds. Most profile him as a center, but he can play some four too. Okongwu is a strong player in the post that could wreak havoc on the inside in the NBA. He could also shine as a vertical spacing lob target.
The former Trojan attempted just four 3-pointers in 28 games this season. The free throw percentage may portend he can grow into a stretch big, but that is not part of his game at this moment.
The Cavaliers need a defensive anchor. Both Darius Garland and Collin Sexton struggle on this end of the floor. Okongwu gives them a safety net. He can protect the rim and defend on the perimeter against switches.
There is a lot to like even without the shooting ability. Okongwu has the upside to be the top player in the 2020 NBA Draft class too.
