NBA Mock Draft #30: Boston Celtics (via Bucks)- Cassius Winston
Winston played four years at Michigan State. The 22-year-old averaged 18.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.2 steals in 32.7 minutes per game as a senior. He shot 44.8 percent from the field, 43.2 percent on his threes, and 85.2 percent from the free throw line.
Winston is an NBA-ready backup point guard from day one. He was one of the best pick and roll ball handlers in the NCAA last season. The former Spartan has the playmaking ability to lead a second unit as a rookie.
He can also play off the ball. Winston hit 43.0 percent of his 602 3-point attempts over his college career. His ability to space the floor and handle the ball provides any NBA team with a versatile offensive option.
There are questions about Winston’s defensive abilities. He is 6’1 and 185 pounds. The 22-year-old has plus speed and quickness, but he may struggle against bigger guards in the NBA.
The Celtics could use someone to slot in behind Kemba Walker. Winston can fill that role immediately as Boston contends for a title next season. The ceiling may not sky high, but there is safety in drafting Winston knowing he is already an NBA role player.
