NBA Mock Draft #26: Boston Celtics- Vernon Carey Jr.

Carey Jr. put together a strong stat line during his lone season at Duke. The 19-year-old averaged 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks in just 24.9 minutes per game. Carey shot 57.7 percent from the field, 38.1 percent on his 3-pointers, and 67.0 percent from the foul line.

There are some questions about his offensive game. He took just 21 threes this season. Will Carey Jr. expand his range and become a 3-point shooter in the NBA? That is unknown. He also scored the majority of his points off post ups. Dallas Mavericks fans know that is dying art in the NBA. Can Carey Jr. become a better roll man and vertical spacer? It is something to watch.

The former Blue Devil is locked in as a center in the NBA. He struggled to defend on the perimeter last season. That limits his upside and could allow teams to play him off the floor by employing a stretch five.

Carey Jr. is a presence in the paint on both ends, but he will have to improve significantly to become a starter in the NBA. The 19-year-old will begin his pro career as a situation role player tasked with rebounding, protecting the rim, and scoring inside.

The Celtics have three first round picks and could use a presence in the paint. Carey Jr. fits that bill and gives them an additional dimension.
