NBA Mock Draft #13: New Orleans Pelicans- Aaron Nesmith
Nesmith’s season lasted just 14 games because of a foot injury and the novel coronavirus pandemic, but he put on a show in that limited sample. The 20-year-old averaged 23.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and 0.9 blocks in 35.7 minutes per game. He shot 51.2 percent from the field, 52.2 percent on his 3-point attempts, and 82.5 percent from the foul line.
Nesmith may be the best shooter in the 2020 NBA Draft class. Over his two seasons at Vanderbilt, he connected on 41.0 percent of his 290 3-point tries. NBA teams are salivating about his catch and shoot ability. Nesmith also performs well coming off screens.
The defensive stats were strong, but there are still some questions. He is 6’6 with a plus wingspan. Nesmith will not be a plus defender as a rookie, though. Expect it to be a focus area of improvement as he shifts to the NBA.
It would not be surprising to hear his name called higher on draft night. Nesmith has the potential to become a 3-and-D starter for a decade-plus. Other prospects may have higher ceilings, but the former Commodores wing should see minutes right away because of his shooting ability. That alone should solidify his position in the lottery.
